September 2025

A Message from the Principal's Office

We are off to a great start at WE! This month, we have been focusing on our character trait for September: Respect. Showing respect helps everyone feel like part of our academic community. Everyday our Wayne Elementary Eagles are taking pride in showing they know what it means to be respectful in our classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, and playground. This year our entire school has been participating in DEAR time at the end of each day: Drop Everything And Read! Our WE team is working on exciting ways to showcase student learning and innovation throughout the upcoming year.
Lunch Visitors will be welcomed to the building starting in October. Please review policies for visitors and food to ensure the safety of our children.
Thank you for your partnership. Wayne Eagles Fly Together!

The Word From Third

September sure is flying by in third grade! We have really enjoyed welcoming all of our new little friends to W.E. and are very pleased with how well they are transitioning to their new building and all of our routines and expectations.
ELA
We have started to read the chapter book, Poppy, by Avi, which is a fantasy tale that features a great-horned owl and a deer mouse. In combination with that, we have been working to identify story elements centered around characters, setting, and plot.
MATH
We are excited to be using the newly adopted Amplify program and have started our third grade year by jumping right into basic multiplication.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We are working on geography skills, learning how to use a map, and identifying the continents and oceans.
REMINDER:
As part of our home/school communication, we ask that you take the time to sign your child’s agenda each night. This helps ensure that you are aware of his/her homework and the nightly expectations for your child. Students also often write reminders down that are important for you to know. We appreciate this home support!

4th Grade News

Our 4th graders are off to a fantastic start to the school year! The students have quickly
adjusted to new routines, are eager to learn, and are already showing great excitement
for the year ahead.

Math – Amplify: Factors and Multiples
We are beginning the year with a brand-new textbook series in Math called Amplify. Our
first unit, Factors and Multiples, has students exploring shape and number patterns,
deciding if numbers are prime or composite, and discovering how the side lengths and
area of a rectangle connect to factors and multiples. These lessons are designed to
deepen mathematical thinking while also giving students opportunities to problem-solve
and explain their reasoning.

Science and Social Studies – Switching Classes
In fourth grade, students will switch classes for Science and Social Studies, giving them
the opportunity to learn from different teachers and build independence.

 Social Studies: History is coming alive as we dive into the story of our own state,
New York! Using our new integrated Social Studies and ELA resource, students
will explore our first unit, The Three Worlds Meet in New York State. This exciting
unit looks at how Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans shaped the history
and culture of New York.

 Science: Our first unit, Riding the Waves of Information, is filled with hands-on
discovery. Students will explore how waves—like light and sound—are used to
communicate. Expect plenty of experiments and engaging activities that spark
curiosity and make science come alive.

We are thrilled for all the learning ahead and look forward to partnering with you
throughout this exciting journey. Thank you for your support in helping make this year a
success!

From the W.E. Library

Miss Pressimone

3rd and 4th graders are excited to be back in the W.E. Library! We have been checking books out for a few weeks and 3rd graders are excited to learn about our library. 3rd graders will also be learning about Good Fit Books and the 5 Finger Test. 4th graders will have a review soon about SORA and 3rd graders will also have a couple lessons about it so they can read electronic books at home or on their Chromebooks.

Students can have a total of 3 items on their card. Students will have an opportunity during their regular library class to check out books or a magazine, but there are also open times at the beginning and end of each day for them to return books and to check out new ones if they need new books before library class.

Books are checked out for 3 weeks, but they can be renewed if no one else is waiting for them and if they’re not from one of the “Most Popular Series” sets that everyone seems to want.

**With the 6 day schedule of an A-F Day rotation, your child’s library class will change weekly. 4th graders have an extra library class during each rotation from now until January 28th and then the 3rd graders will have an extra library class during each rotation for the rest of the year.

Regular Library Class Days for 1st Semester: (September 2 – January 28)
A Day – Hayner/Carroll, Lepsch
B Day – Mann/Standinger, Battoglia
C Day – McCormick, Carter
E Day – Bradstreet/Standinger, Hurny/Carroll, Young, McGurk, St. Pierre
F Day – Wordingham, Burns, Pratt

Please make sure your child is keeping their books in a safe spot at home away from pets and young children. I have talked with students about keeping books in their backpacks whenever they’re not reading them so they don’t get lost around the house and about keeping them in there if they go back and forth between houses. Please remind your child to not put books in backpacks with water bottles, juice bottles, etc. so books don’t get ruined going back and forth to school and to also be careful with food in their backpacks around books.

Scholastic Book Fair Coming in November!
We will be having a Scholastic Book Fair November 17-21, 2025.
It will be in school during your child’s library class that week and we will have 2 Family Nights based on your last name. There is always an online shopping link that you can use or share with family members. More information will be coming as it gets closer.
**If you are interested in volunteering for the November Book Fair or for the one in May (May 11 – May 15), please contact me ASAP. I need to start a list of volunteers and you will need to fill out a Volunteer Application ASAP to get approval.

After School Library Club

Session 1 of Library Club will begin on October 14 and it will end on December 2. It is
called “It’s All About the Books.” We will talk about books we love and students will do
some silent reading each week with a book of their choice.
Session 2 will be a repeat of Session 1 and it will run December 9 – January 27.
**Please have your child contact me for a permission slip.
Sign-ups for Session 3 and Session 4 (Games in the Library) will begin in January.

Library Recess

I am excited to offer Library Recess on A Days. Each teacher will have 4 Library
Recess passes that they can pass out to students. Students will then come to the
library after eating lunch instead of going outside or to the classroom for their recess
time. Students can sit and chat, read, play games, or do some of the activities I’ll be
putting out.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or comments you have about
anything related to books or the library.
Thank you,
Miss Pressimone

News from the Art Room

From Mrs. Conrow

Dear Wayne Elementary Artists and Families,

My name is Jennifer Conrow, and I am so excited to be your child’s WE art teacher! Since some of you are new to the school, I would like to take this opportunity to give you some information on what to expect for art class this year.

Schedule and Smocks: As you know, we have moved to an A-F day rotation. I will see 4th grade classes once per rotation the first half of the year, and 3rd grade classes twice per rotation with a focus on Project Based Learning (PBL). The second half of the year I will have the opposite schedule. Art class can be a bit messy so please keep this in mind when dressing for school on your scheduled art day. I do not have art smocks available in the classroom, but if you would like to send in an old button-up dress shirt or apron your child may keep this in his/her backpack for class. If you choose to do this, please put your child’s name on the smock and remind them to put it on before coming to class.

Artsonia: Throughout the school year, I like to display student work throughout the halls and at different venues. This means that instead of sending home artwork as it is completed, I will be hanging on to a lot of it for these opportunities. So, please don’t panic if your child doesn’t bring his/her work home! In the meantime, you can view much of your student’s work through Artsonia. This program is an online art gallery that allows parents to view students' work electronically, and also offers the opportunity to purchase products featuring their student’s artwork. If you already joined last year, you are all set. Third grade and new students should be receiving email invitations by the end of the month.

Art Club and Art Enrichment: Soon I will be sending home applications for after school Art Club. Art club is always extremely popular, so I will not be able to include every child, but I will certainly include as many as possible. Another opportunity for extra art is available during the day in the form of Art Enrichment groups. These groups are selected by the classroom teacher as a way to offer further art development for interested students.

What we are working on: Our student artists have already been busy at work these first couple weeks. Third grade artists began the year with projects based on the art of NYC born artist James Rizzi. We are making paintings of “Happy Communities” with a focus on line, shape, and overlapping. In fourth grade we are starting Farm Landscape paintings inspired by our own farming community. We are focusing on space and perspective in our work. In third grade PBL classes, we have been exploring the connection between art and the scientific process of observation through Nature Journalling with our Enrichment specialist, Mrs. Johnson.

I am looking forward to an awesome year together! Please feel free to contact me at jconrow@waynecsd.org with any concerns you may have. See you at Open House!

Artfully yours,
Mrs. Conrow

Updates from P.E.

From Mrs. Simpson and Mrs. Watson

Hello WE Families!

Just a few highlights…

  • PE Newsletter was sent out last week and should have been in your child’s take home folder.
  • Thank you for turning in your child’s playground license.
  • Sneakers are mandatory to participate in PE and Recess. Please note that if your child is not wearing sneakers they have to sit-out. We are focusing on being prepared by wearing sneakers everyday, or leaving a pair of extra sneakers at school.
  • Learning to tie sneakers is a life skill and something children at this age should be able to do. Please take some time with your child at home to practice tying their sneakers if they don’t already know how. Did you know there is more than one way to tie sneakers?? If not, go to YouTube for a selection of videos.
  • When your child has PE, please help them remember to remove ALL jewelry prior to coming to class. This might mean teaching your child how to remove dangly/hoop earrings and necklace. Safety is our number one priority. As your child starts to play school sports, jewelry has to be removed.
  • We take our classes outside as much as possible until the snow flies. Please have them prepared with sneakers, a sweatshirt/jacket, and an extra pair of socks for morning classes.
