A Message From the Main Office

Ms. Nicolo & Ms. Strouse

We are hitting our stride at WE! Our character trait for the month of October is: Responsibility. Ask your child about all of the opportunities they have to demonstrate responsibility at school. Supporting reading logs and homework completion is a great way to reinforce responsibility at home.
This month we began welcoming lunch visitors to the building. Please review policies for visitors and note that we ask parents to sign out immediately following lunch. Also please note policies that prohibit sharing of food to ensure the safety of our children.
October brings Halloween festivities to WE! If you have not yet done so, please read our letter outlining plans for the Halloween Parade as well as costume rules.
You have been or will be contacted by your student's teacher with an invitation to sign up for a Parent/Teach Conference Time. Please take advantage of this opportunity to continue building a partnership with your student's teacher.
Thank you for your support. Wayne Eagles Fly Together!

The Word from Third

It is hard to believe that our third graders are halfway through the month of October already! They are all doing a great job following classroom routines and working hard to meet our third grade expectations.
Here is what has been happening with their learning

ELA
We are halfway through our novel study on Poppy, by Avi. Students are really enjoying this story about a mouse named Poppy and her quest to find a better life for her family by facing Mr. Ocax, the great-horned owl who rules Dimwood Forest. They have been very engaged with our book discussions, have been making excellent predictions and are learning to reflect on what they have read.

MATH
We have started Unit 2, which focuses on students applying what they learned about multiplication to figuring out area of rectangular figures.

SCIENCE
Students are excited to be engaged with their first Science unit of third grade! Our topic of study is weather and climate.

HOMEWORK
Please remember that part of your child’s nightly homework is to read for at least 20 min. five times per week and to fill out their Reading Log each time they read. They should also be practicing their fluency using the Reflex program found in Classlink.

Fourth Grade News

We are starting a new math unit that focuses on Fractions. In this unit students will explore fractions in a variety of ways. We’ll begin by learning about the size and locations of fractions, helping students make sense of fractions as numbers using hands-on materials and visual models. Once students have a solid understanding of what fractions represent, we’ll move on to equivalent fractions. During this part of the unit, students will learn how to generate and identify fractions that are equal in value, and they’ll use pictures, models, and number strategies to explain and justify their thinking. Finally, we’ll focus on comparing and ordering fractions. Students will practice using visual models, benchmark fractions (like ½), and number reasoning to determine which fractions are greater or less than others.

Throughout the unit, students will become familiar with key math vocabulary, including common denominator, common numerator, tenth, and hundredth. By the end of this unit, they’ll have a stronger understanding of how fractions work and how they fit into our number system.

Red Ribbon Week, founded in 1988 to honor DEA agent Enrique Camarena, is celebrated nationwide to promote drug-free choices. Here, at Wayne Elementary, we will focus on Healthy Choices. Please talk with your child about the importance of this message and encourage them to show support by participating in the themed dress-up days.

Halloween Parade Reminder

Halloween is just around the corner.   Wayne Primary and Wayne Elementary will continue the special tradition of having our annual WP/WE Halloween Parade on Friday, October 31st from 9:35 a.m. - 10:35 a.m.  The parade route includes our students walking around the WP/WE  bus loop.  The parade will begin with WP students walking from WP around the WE bus loop, then the WE students will proudly have their turn to parade around WP.  When the parade ends, we will continue on with our instructional day.  Family members are welcome to join in the fun by being a spectator during the parade. You will not need to sign in at the main office.

Our children really look forward to dressing in costume and enjoy the tradition of a Halloween Parade with their school community.  Please read through the following reminders to ensure this event is safe and fun for our students:

  • In the event of rain or extreme weather, the outside parade will be canceled and an email will be sent out to all families. WP and WE will host an inside parade for staff and students only.
  • Children may bring, not wear their costumes to school on the 31st. Teachers will provide time for children to get dressed in their costumes prior to the beginning of the parade.
  • Please note that accompanying accessories that mimic a weapon (swords, knives, guns, etc.) are not allowed at school.
  • Shoes must be worn at all times with costumes.
  • We need to be able to see everyone's faces and eyes.
  • No full face masks
  • No inflatable costumes that cover a student’s face

Thank you and we look forward to a great parade!

The Scholastic Book Fair is Almost Here! – November 17-21
We will be having a Scholastic Book Fair November 17-21, 2024 in the W.E. Library.
It will be in school during your child’s library class that week. There will also be an online shopping link that you can use or share with family members. Any online orders will be shipped directly to your home. Flyers will be going home in November along with more details in a parent letter. The class schedule will be on that letter.
Please use the website link below to check out our homepage.

**Please be sure to look into signing up for the eWallet feature. You can load money into an account for your child and they will be able to shop the Book Fair without having to bring in cash or a check. You can begin signing up for eWallet on October 27. Any leftover money rolls over to be used at the next Book Fair as long as you use the SAME EMAIL to set it up. Credit cards are also accepted in person.

FOR CHECKS:  Checks need to be made out to: Wayne Central School District

**BOOK FAIR FAMILY NIGHTS:  We are going to continue doing 2 Family Nights based on your Last Name. This has worked well in the past to spread everyone out due to space constraints and family schedules. If you are unable to come on your assigned night, you are more than welcome to come the other night.
Last Names of A-L will come Wednesday, November 19 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM and
Last Names of M-Z will come Thursday, November 20 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

After School Library Club
Session 1 of Library Club began a couple weeks ago and it will end on December 2. It is called “It’s All About the Books.” We will talk about books we love and students will do some silent reading each week with a book of their choice.
Session 2 will be a repeat of Session 1 and it will run December 9 – January 27.
I still have room for students to join Session 2.
Please have your child contact me for a permission slip.
Sign-ups for Session 3 and Session 4 (Games in the Library) will begin in January.

What We’re Learning
3rd Graders have been talking about Good Fit Books and the Five Finger Test.
4th Graders did a fun I Spy activity and have been listening to Native American tales. We’re getting ready to work on a Junior Ranger Erie Canal booklet to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Erie Canal.
Library Books
Several books are starting to become overdue, please help your child look around for any books they’re missing.

Students can have a total of 3 items on their card. Students will have an opportunity during their regular library class to check out books or a magazine, but there are also open times at the beginning and end of each day for them to return books and to check out new ones.

Books are checked out for 3 weeks, but can be renewed if no one else is waiting for them or if they’re not from one of the “Most Popular Series” sets that everyone seems to want.

Updates from the Art Room

Mrs. Conrow

Dear Wayne Elementary Artists and Families,
This year has had a fabulous start! Students are working hard at being both the best artists that they can be, as well as the best students they can be.
What we are working on
Third grade artists used their skills of observation that we practiced in our Nature Journaling to draw pumpkins. We then used imagination to transform our pumpkins into homes for fairies or small animals. In our Extra Art PBL classes we are drawing Nocturnal Animals to support their ELA exploration of the book Poppy.
In fourth grade we just completed our Farm Landscape paintings inspired by our own farming community. This week we are learning about the holiday Dia de Los Muertos celebrated by many Latin American countries. We are drawing Calaveras (skulls) and using embossing to transfer our drawings onto foil. Color will be added with Sharpies and acrylic paint.
Make sure to check out your student’s completed work on Artsonia!
Art Club and Art Enrichment:
The first session of Art Club began last week. We started off by making clay pumpkin plates for the fall. Our first groups of 4th grade Art Enrichment students are finishing up sewing small stuffies or wallets. They have been super excited to learn this new skill.
Artfully yours,
Mrs. Conrow
