A Message from the Principal's Office

Ms. Nicolo & Ms. Strouse

We are excited to welcome parents for conferences next week. Thank you in advance for your active partnership and participation in your child's education!

We have been very busy preparing to welcome second grade to the Wayne Elementary building next year. The entire grade level, along with all of the amazing second grade teachers currently stationed at Wayne Primary, will be coming to W.E. It is a very exciting and busy time for us as we plan for the transition. Some important points to note:
  • Placement will run as it normally would
  • Second grade will continue to use the same curricular resources
  • AIS and special education providers will also move to maintain the same level of support
  • School hours and drop off/pick up times will not change
  • Room locations are in the process of being finalized, but second grade classrooms will be together.
  • We are planning welcome events for both incoming grade levels, similar to the events that have traditionally been done with second graders. A new addition will be 1st and 2nd grade visits to a Monday Meeting assembly!

We are continuing to explore the biography genre as we read and learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his dream for peace and equality for all humankind.

MATH
We have just completed our unit on division and will be starting the exciting and fun topic of fractions next week.

SCIENCE
"Where Are the Wolves?" This is an exciting unit where students have been exploring and investigating reasons why wolves disappeared from the Adirondack Mountains and evaluating whether or not they think they should be reintroduced to the region.

Reminder:
Please remember that it is our third grade expectation that your child read for at least 20 minutes 5x/week, as well as complete and hand in their weekly Reading Log. Thank you for this important home support!

Fourth Graders Experience a Powerful Performance by Resonanz

On Friday, February 27, our fourth grade students at Wayne Elementary School had the wonderful opportunity to attend a live performance at Wayne Elementary by Resonanz, the versatile ensemble of the Rochester Oratorio Society. Known for performing pop, jazz, Americana, and holiday music in a variety of settings—from convention centers to community events—Resonanz is also widely recognized for its strong commitment to educational outreach. The group regularly brings meaningful programs with social and historical significance to schools and libraries throughout the region.

During their visit, Resonanz presented a powerful musical program centered on the life of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. The performance was based on the musical composition They Called Her Moses by Robert De Cormier. This moving work features choral pieces and solos inspired by spirituals of the time, woven together with narration.

Through music and storytelling, students followed Harriet Tubman’s journey from her beginnings as an enslaved person, through her courageous escape to freedom, and ultimately to her heroic missions guiding others along the Underground Railroad. The performance was both educational and inspiring, bringing history to life in a memorable way. Our fourth graders had a fantastic time and gained a deeper appreciation for the bravery, resilience, and leadership that shaped this important chapter in American history.

P.E. Updates

Mrs. Simpson & Mrs. Watson

Attention WE Race Fans! 🏁

Let’s give a huge congratulations to Tyler Reddick on winning his first-ever Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 15! This thrilling victory also marks the first Daytona 500 win for 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin.

Inspired by the excitement of the Daytona 500, we have transformed our gymnasium into a high-energy race track, giving our WE students the chance to experience the thrill of NASCAR firsthand! Throughout this unit, students will explore racing concepts while building teamwork skills, improving fitness, and learning about the passion and dedication that fuel the sport.

With many NASCAR races televised throughout the season, we encourage you to watch part of a race with your child. It’s a fun and meaningful way to connect what they’re learning at school to real-world racing action!

Take a peek at the incredible cars our WE students have entered into the 2026 Daytona 500 Coloring Contest—we are so proud of their creativity and enthusiasm.

Thank you for being part of this exciting school event and for supporting our students as they race toward learning and fitness success!

Updates from the Art Room

Mrs. Conrow

Dear Wayne Elementary Artists and Families,
February has been filled with some amazing art making in our classroom. Our third grade artists did a fabulous job working with clay this month. We learned how to make a pinch pot bowl, and then transformed that bowl into a Mouthy Monster. These were finished by painting our monsters in either Warm or Cool colors. We are currently working on paintings of the Solar System using oil pastels and watercolor paints.
In fourth grade we have two exciting projects we have been working on. The first is that every 4th grader in the school was able to be a part of a community mural based on the 200th Anniversary of the Erie Canal. Eight fourth graders worked with myself and Mrs. Johnson to plan, draw, and begin painting of two murals. Next, each 4th grade student was invited to paint a small section of one of the murals. The murals should be completed this week, and will hopefully be displayed for conferences in March! Students are also excited to begin working on clay bust sculptures this month. This is always a favorite project - I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
The third session of Art Club began this week. We will have one more session in the Spring. Emails will be sent home at the end of March to notify members of the final session. I made an effort to fit in nearly every student that signed up, but due to high demand I was not able to include everyone. Please sign up again next year in either our school or at the Middle School.
Artfully yours,
Mrs. Conrow

Library News

Miss Pressimone

3rd graders have been working on using call numbers to find books on the shelves. They also started learning about how to use a dictionary.

All 3rd and 4th graders read some books to learn about African-Americans from the past for Black History Month in February.  Both grade levels will also read some books to learn about amazing girls and women from the past for Women’s History Month.

March is…
  • Women’s History Month – Read about a woman that impacted our history.
  • National Craft Month – Learn a new craft or do some crafts with your kids.
  • National Nutrition Month – Cook up some healthy snacks and meals together.
  • Spring Begins (March 20) – Do some spring cleaning around the house.

Save the Date and Volunteer!
Scholastic Book Fair is May 11 – May 15
Our BOGO (Buy 1, Get 1 Free) Scholastic Book Fair will be May 11 – May 15 in the Library. More information will be coming as we get closer to those dates.
**Please contact me now if you’re able to volunteer that week during your child’s class and/or with other classes. You MUST be an approved volunteer if you’d like to help out.
Please fill out the form on the district website if you haven’t done so already.

Family Night for Last Name A-L will be Wednesday, May 13 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
Family Night for Last Name M-Z will be Thursday, May 14 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
**Of course you can come on either night regardless of your last name, but we’re just trying to limit the number of people in the room at one time due to the space. I also found that having the Book Fair open 2 nights worked well for families that might have had a prior commitment on the one night.

Library Club
Session 3 of Library Club called “Games in the Library” started in February. 28 students are having fun learning some new games while playing some they already knew. Session 3 runs until April 7. Session 4 is a repeat of Session 3 and begins April 14.

Monthly BINGO Sheets
Don’t forget that the February BINGO sheets are due by Tuesday, March 3. Students will receive stickers to put on a poster in the library hallway that we’ll be working together to make a mystery picture. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to read too. Please let me know if you have any questions about this program.

Spring Cleaning for Library Books
There are several overdue library books. Please help your child look for any books they might have misplaced and get them returned to the library. Please help them keep their books in a safe place at home so they can remember to return them on time.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you need reading suggestions for your child or if you have any questions or comments about anything related to the library.
