The Word from Third

ELA
We have entered the historical fiction genre with our new Read Aloud book, Glory Be, by Augusta Scattergood. Students have also been working hard using the RACE strategy to answer questions in response to text read.

R = Restate the Question
A = Answer the Question
C = Cite
E = Evidence ( x 2 )

MATH
We recently completed our fraction unit and are now focusing on elapsed time and measurement, as well as starting to review for the upcoming NYS Math Test, which takes place in early May.

SCIENCE
Students loved earning about wolves! They had the opportunity to examine artifacts like animal skulls and fossils and gathered information about the advantages and disadvantages of reintroducing wolves to the Adirondack Mountain region. As part of this learning, they even got to make their own fossils!

Important Reminder:
It is part of your child's homework to read for at least 20 minutes 5x/week and to complete (and hand in) the corresponding reading log. They should also consistently be working on FRAX as well.

Fourth Grade News

Multiplying and Dividing Multi-Digit Numbers

Our fourth graders have just completed their unit on multiplying and dividing larger numbers. During this time, students explored several strategies for multiplying multi-digit numbers.

For division, we focused on one consistent approach called the “bus stop” method. This method is very similar to the standard algorithm many adults are familiar with.

Included with this article is an image that shows a side-by-side comparison of the standard method and the bus stop method. You’ll notice that both methods follow the same steps in the same order—the main difference is where the work is written. In the standard method, the work is typically organized in a vertical column. In the bus stop method, the numbers are spaced out, and the work is completed within that space.

Updates from the Art Room

Mrs. Conrow

Hello, WE Families!
Spring has finally sprung, and our WE artists are definitely "growing" their creativity this month!!! In third grade, the students are completing work on their Jungle Collages inspired by artists Henri Rousseau, and Karen Cornelius. This was a multi-step project focusing on the elements of collage, texture, and space. They are coming out beautifully! I can't wait to fill the halls with these sweet projects.
In fourth grade, we just completed work on our Clay Bust projects. The art work kids produced is absolutely amazing. Please check out the display cases next time you come in! We are currently working on the most difficult project of the year - self-portraits. Students are learning to draw faces with correct spacing and proportions. We are also focusing on telling our personal stories through our art through added details.
This week we started our final session of after school Art Club. I am looking forward to working with our new group!
As always, thank you for your continued support of our Artsonia website. Kids love when you check out their work!
Happy Spring!

Save the Date – May 11 – May 15
Buy 1, Get 1 Free Scholastic Book Fair!
The Buy 1, Get 1 Free Scholastic Book Fair will be in the library May 11 – May 15.
More information will be in the letter that comes home the week before the Book Fair.
The class schedule will also be in that letter.

Family Night for Last Name A-L will be Wednesday, May 13 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
Family Night for Last Name M-Z will be Thursday, May 14 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
**Of course you can come on either night regardless of your last name, but we’re just trying to limit the number of people in the room at one time due to the space. I also found that having the Book Fair open for 2 nights worked well for families that might have had a prior commitment on one of the nights.

You can check out the Book Fair Homepage below starting on May 20. You can also
sign your child up for an eWallet beginning that day.

All Library Books Due Friday, May 29
Please be sure to have your child return ALL their library books.
Any books that are not returned must be paid for or replaced.

April is Poetry Month
Students have been listening to a wide variety of poems in library and many students have been sharing poems on the morning announcements. Wayne Elementary also celebrated poetry April 10, April 15, and April 30 with Poem in Your Pocket days. Many students and staff carried poems in their pockets on these days and were “pulled over” by Poetry Police and had to read their poems. Ask your students about some of their favorite poems!

Paperback Book Exchange
Detailed information coming home soon, but set aside up to 5 paperback books that your child NO LONGER WANTS and they’ll be able to trade them in for books that other students bring in. This will happen during a library class in June. This is an optional activity.

Ontario Public Library Visits
Classes will be walking to the Ontario Public Library the week of June 8 – June 12. Students will receive information about the Summer Reading Program and may have the opportunity to check out a book. Students MUST bring their library card that day in order to check out a book. More information will come home soon.

Screen-Free Week is May 4 – May 10
Screen-Free Week is about limiting the amount of time that we spend looking at screens for entertainment. Challenge your family to have at least one day/night at home of screen free time to celebrate National Screen Free Week.
