Message from the Principal's Office

Hello WE families!
Things are getting busier everyday as we get closer to the end of the school year. Sunny days are occurring with much more regularity, and we are happy to see students spending more time outside for recess. Outdoor fun will continue as we look forward to Flag Day, Field Day, and celebrating all of our student's achievement. Our WE musicians visited a Red Wings game this month and are polishing their repertoire for the final concert of the year on June 9th.
We are excited to be welcoming Laura Marchegiano to WE as our new building secretary! She started this week and is already keeping things running smoothly.
Thank you for your support as we work toward a strong end to the school year!

The Word from Third

THANK YOU!!!!! to all our chaperones who joined us for our field trip to the Rochester Museum and Science Center! The students had a wonderful time and really enjoyed “a day of play” and all the hands-on activities!

In other news.....

SCIENCE
We were so excited to launch our first-ever Invisible Forces Science Days last week!! The students had a great time with all the hands-on investigations learning about forces, gravity, magnetism, and friction. It was wonderful to see them so engaged with their learning!

ELA
We are focusing on the Historical Fiction genre through our Read Aloud book, Glory Be. Our lessons and discussions have been helping students continue the development of their higher-level thinking skills as they work through analyzing characters, identifying problems, making appropriate predictions and inferences and making connections to other “civil rights themed” books that we have already read.

MATH
Geometry is "SHAPING UP" to be a great unit!! Students have been learning about polygons, solid shapes, and angles and are building upon their understanding of the connection between area and perimeter.

Fourth Grade News

This week, our fourth graders went on a field trip to Historic Palmyra. This trip was funded through the Ticket to Ride program, which is part of a grant offered by the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the National Park Service.

During the trip, students had the opportunity to see how the Erie Canal lock system works and participated in a guided tour of Historic Palmyra. The fourth grade social studies curriculum includes units on the Erie Canal and the lives of early settlers in our region, so this experience connected directly to classroom learning.

While visiting Historic Palmyra, students explored a General Store, Print Shop, and several other buildings dating back to the early 1800s. It was a valuable hands-on learning experience for our students.

Next week, the fourth grade will be going on a field trip to Ganondagan State Historic Site. Students will have the opportunity to tour the Seneca Bark Longhouse, which represents the return of a traditional Seneca dwelling to a site that was destroyed in 1687 by the French Marquis de Denonville. The Longhouse is furnished to closely resemble an original 1670 longhouse and includes replicas of European and colonial trade goods, along with items created and crafted by the Seneca people. Students will also learn about the crops, herbs, and medicines that were grown, harvested, and preserved by the Seneca who once lived at Ganondagan.

In addition to visiting the Longhouse, students will tour the Ganondagan Museum and participate in a traditional outdoor Haudenosaunee game. This trip will provide students with another engaging, hands-on connection to their social studies learning.

Updates from the Art Room

This month in Art Class our 4th grade students were introduced to basic editing skills in PhotoShop as they created Comic characters. These characters were made to go in the comic strips they have created in Computer class. Students are having a great time with this introduction to basic Digital Art.
In third grade, students completed flower paintings inspired by Rochester artist Heather Galler. Galler's use of intricate patterns and vibrant colors were imitated in our abstract paintings. Next up: Weaving on paper plate looms!
Last week was our final meeting of Art Club. I look forward to starting new sessions next fall.

Artfully yours,
Mrs. Conrow

Message From The Library

Miss Pressimone

Thank You W.E. Families - I'm Ready for the Next Chapter!
After 27 years as a school librarian at Ontario/Wayne Elementary School and 32 years total, I am sad, but excited to announce that I will be retiring next month. It is definitely a bittersweet feeling. I have loved getting students excited about books and reading, I’ve enjoyed doing various sessions of Library Club, I loved bringing the book fair to everyone, and I can’t forget all the lessons, reading programs, author visits, Battle of the Books, Storytelling groups, contests, and fun I’ve had during my career. It’s hard to believe that I reached the point in my career that I am co-workers with former students and that I am teaching the children of former students. I have loved every moment of celebrating books and reading with thousands of students and I want to thank all of you for your support over the years. I am looking forward to the next chapter and whatever it brings, but I'm especially looking forward to having lots of time to read!

Book Fair Thank You!
I would like to thank the W.E. families for their support of the recent BOGO Book Fair. We will be able to give every student a free book at the Fall 2026 Book Fair due to the success of our book fairs this year. I would like to thank the following people for their help with volunteering at the Book Fair. I couldn’t have done it without their help. Jamie Corso, Kate Baranek, Jeanne Robillard, Gina Schreiber, Jen Wall, Vickie Coro, Chelsea Collier, Lisa Robusto-Mack, Erica Hendrikse, Vita Barci, Vera Pressimone, Linda Wyse, Nancy Frederes, Linda Harding, Jean Stein, Kate Coluccelli, Cara VanderBrook, Debbie Maier, Jen Conrow, Carla Herbst, and Sandy Adolf.
Thank you also to the W.E. Main Office and W.E. Custodial Staff for all their help.
The PTO will be running the W.E. Book Fair in the future.

ALL Library Books Due Friday, May 29
Please have your child return their books by May 29. Phone calls will go home after that for books that weren’t returned to the library.
If you can’t find the lost book, you can purchase a replacement copy on Amazon
or send in the replacement cost.

Paperback Book Exchange
The Paperback Book Exchange will happen during library classes in June. Your child can bring in up to 5 paperback books that they NO LONGER WANT and they’ll be able to trade them in for books that other students bring in. Books must be in good condition and must be appropriate for students going into 4th and 5th grade.
Exact dates and more detailed information will be coming home soon.

Ontario Public Library Visits
All classes will visit the Ontario Public Library the week of June 8 – June 11. Students will receive information about the Summer Reading Program and may have the opportunity to check out a book. Students MUST bring their library card that day in order to check out a book. If your child doesn’t have a library card, please visit the public library before then to get one.

FIELD DAYS....

On Thursday, June 18th, Wayne Elementary will hold its annual Field Day!
Field Day Purpose
The main goal of Field Day is to promote sportsmanship while giving students opportunities to demonstrate the Hard Hat Character traits they have practiced all year. Throughout the day, students will work on accepting challenges when things do not go their way, solving problems using rock-paper-scissors, and showing respect to others.
What to Wear & Bring
Students should wear comfortable clothing appropriate for outdoor activities, such as T-shirts, tank tops, and shorts. Swimsuits are not permitted.
Please send your child with:
  • Hat and/or sunglasses
  • A beach towel for sitting during the picnic lunch and drying off after the Water Walk
  • Labeled water bottle
  • Sneakers are required to wear
For safety reasons, sandals, water shoes, Keens, open-toed shoes, flip-flops, and Crocs are not allowed.
Since students will spend much of the day outside, waterproof sunscreen is recommended and should be applied at home before arriving at school.
Parent Spectators
Teachers will contact families with a specific time slot to watch their child participate in Field Day activities. Please note that only outdoor activities may be observed. Due to limited space and the large number of visitors, spectators will not be permitted inside the building for indoor activities.
We also ask that families arrive only during their assigned time slot to help ensure parking is available for everyone.
We are looking forward to an incredible day filled with fun, teamwork, and school spirit!
